January Goal Setting

2025 is here.

It’s hard to believe that we are in a whole new chapter already starting with January.  With a new year comes reflection on the past and planning for the future.

There are different ways to go about this and we will talk about them. The important thing to do is carve out the time to make it happen if you haven’t already.

Reflection

Let’s talk about reflection.  Looking back at the past year of 2024 is important.  It’s something you can build on since you already have those habits and routines established. Think about it but also write it down.  The best way to accomplish this would be through journaling.  I know journaling can feel daunting to some but doing it towards the end of the year one time is more doable.

Here are some prompts to get you started:

What were the wins of 2024?

What were the difficulties of 2024?

What were you most proud of?

How was your health?

How was your career?

How did you change in the last year?

How did you live according to your values?

How did your family and friendships evolve?

Is there anything that got in the way of success?

Was anything left unfinished?

Project for 2025

Now that you have some reflection on paper. It’s time to add in some goals for 2025.  This can look like a New Year’s resolution, a vision board, a word for the year, or just monthly goals in general. Let’s define each so you know which one is a good fit for you.

A New Year’s resolution - a tradition in which people set personal goals or intentions for the upcoming year. The idea is to start the new year with a fresh mindset and a commitment to making positive changes in one’s life. An example would be to go to the gym or no phones after 8pm.

A vision board - a visual tool used to represent your goals, dreams, and aspirations. It’s typically a collage of images, words, and quotes that symbolize what you want to achieve or attract in your life. Then you hang it somewhere you see everyday to make that vision a reality.

A New Year’s word - refers to a word or theme that a person chooses to focus on in the new year. Rather than setting a specific goal, someone might pick a word that represents a mindset or guiding principle for the year ahead. Some examples would be intentional, consistency, routine, or boundaries.

Goal setting – a specific, measurable objective or desired outcome that a person aims to achieve within a set period. Goals provide direction and focus, helping individuals prioritize actions and stay motivated. They can be short-term or long-term. Goals are often broken down into smaller, manageable steps, and they can relate to any area of life.

You can do one or many! Once you’ve reflected on 2024, now it’s time to project for 2025.

Answer some questions below to give you some guidance:

Do you have a word for this year?

Do you have a resolution for this year?

What relationships do you want to improve?

What relationships need some healthy boundaries?

What do you need to say yes to?

What do you need to say no to?

What needs to change in your career?

Who can support you?

What would be considered a success in January?

What would be considered success in 2025?

What habit can you add in today?

Hopefully this provided clarity for you.

Now you can move forward with confidence this year. Here’s to 2025!
