What’s in Your Toothpaste?

I am on a mission to reduce my exposure to harsh chemicals or unknown substances. The latest product I am replacing is my toothpaste. I purchased some toothpaste from Doterra, an essential oil company, to begin the journey. It was an easy swap for me because it still comes in a tube and it still tastes pretty good. I got that refreshed feeling after brushing each day.

After going through a full tube I realized I needed to place an order when it was too late. I stared at the other 2 options in the drawer and without thinking about it resorted back to a “mainstream” toothpaste brand. Well, after my body was used to the new and natural Doterra brand, it decided to rebel against my choice of being lazy and forgetful with my next order. I woke up with a canker sore right next to my molar.

This got me thinking and recalling there being a connection with toothpastes and canker sores. I did a quick google search and voila, there it was. The ingredient, sodium lauryl sulfate, has been linked to canker sores in toothpaste. One study even mentioned that 42% of individuals will break out from a rash or have redness when it touches their skin. What does that mean for when we swallow it?!

Lesson learned, I will no longer be continuing with my “mainstream” toothpastes and will stick to the natural and organic brands. I challenge you to take a look at your own toothpaste and google the ingredients for yourself. It is quite surprising and I wish I had made the switch sooner.
